Kitchen + Laundry Room
From Chaos to Home: Our Wild Ride Renovating Gran Gran’s House
It all started with an unexpected opportunity — the chance to purchase my husband Jesse’s Gran Gran and Papa’s home. This wasn’t just any house. It was well-known in the area, full of character, and sat on 14 acres of absolutely beautiful land. It was one of those places that just meant something — to Jesse’s family, to the community, and now, to us.
We knew deep down this was something we wanted to pursue. We imagined raising our family there, adding new memories to the old ones already etched into those walls. What we didn’t fully anticipate was just how wild the journey would be getting there.
At the time, our daughter was just about 18 months old — full of energy and curiosity. We made the tough (but budget-friendly) decision to sell the first home we had built together and live in an RV on the property while we renovated the house. Looking back, I can laugh, but at the time… let’s just say it was character-building.
We kicked off the renovation in March of 2022, full of excitement and a little naivety. We thought living on-site in a tiny space would help us finish faster. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
Somewhere in the middle of drywall dust, plumbing surprises, and long nights juggling toddler meltdowns, I found out I was pregnant with our second child. Cue the chaos!
We pushed through month after month, driven by the dream of raising our growing family in that special home. And finally — finally — we wrapped up the renovation just two days before our son, Ozzy, was born in May 2023. I came home from the hospital to a mostly finished house… and a lot of unpacked boxes. But it was ours. It was home.
That chapter of our life was an absolute blur — RV life, renovation setbacks, toddler tantrums, pregnancy hormones, and all — but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It taught us patience, resilience, and gave us a whole new appreciation for what “home” really means.
As a designer, making choices for my own home wasn’t easy—but staying true to my vision paid off. I’ve always loved Earth tones, so we kept a natural, cohesive palette throughout.
Two of my favorite spaces are the kitchen and laundry room. In the kitchen, we used natural maple wood with a clear coat on the island, base cabinets, and fridge surround to highlight its organic beauty. The uppers are painted Sherwin Williams “Creamy,” adding a soft, warm contrast. The result is a calm, inviting space that truly feels like home.

The laundry room and garage were custom additions to our original floor plan, giving us the flexibility to design them exactly as we envisioned. In the laundry room, the lockers and cabinetry are painted in Sherwin-Williams “Roycroft Bronze Green”—a deep, earthy tone that brings character and richness to the space.
I’ll be sharing a design board below that highlights the finishes and material choices in both the kitchen and laundry room—two of the most loved and lived-in rooms in our home.
